2026 Firewise Community Event

Sterlingshire’s Firewise Committee is hard at work on our second community event since being recognized last year as a Firewise Community. This year’s will take place Saturday, May 2, which is National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. It is held to raise awareness so people can improve the safety of their homes and communities against wildfire. 

Last year’s event took place at Murray-Homestead Park. This year’s will be right in our neighborhood, organized around a “Firewise Map of the Stars” highlighting what neighbors are doing to make their homes more fire-resistant. Residents will be able to visit these homes between the hours of 10 a.m. to noon to get ideas and possible contractor suggestions—with the bonus of becoming better acquainted with their neighbors. 

Several have already volunteered to be “Firewise Stars," but a couple more are needed as well. They might, for example, have fire-resistant metal gutters or vents. Some may have made landscaping changes, whether to make their homes safer or to meet insurance company requirements. The idea is to show the variety of steps, large and small, which people can take incrementally to make their properties safer.
